INTRODUCTION TO INTARSIA

Intarsia often conjures up images of voluminous ‘80s sweaters covered in puppies, chicks, and Laura Ashley florals. But the technique itself is super easy, super fun, and lends itself incredibly well to modern, linear, and graphic shapes. In this class, we’ll learn how to work intarsia flat, then how to shift stitches and even talk about how to work intarsia in the round.

• Experience needed: knitting, purling, increasing, decreasing

• Homework: With smooth, non-haloed worsted weight yarn and US 7 [4.5 mm] circular needle, please cast on 30 stitches and work about an inch [2.5 cm] in stockinette stitch, worked flat and ending after a WS row. Do not bind off. Make sure to leave at least another 70 yards [64 m] of yarn attached

• Materials: 30 yards [27 m] of different-colored yarn in the same weight, writing implement for taking notes

In this class, Alicia will take you through each step of processing raw wool using simple, affordable tools that you can find at the local hardware and grocery stores! By the end of this class you will be able to pick, wash, card/comb and SPIN yarn from your very own hand processed wool. Let's get our hands dirty!

SLOW SEAMING: FINISHING & SEAMING TECHNIQUES SIMPLIFIED

You don't have to fear the question "does it involve seaming?" ever again! Weaving in ends and seaming can be meditative and soothing if you have the right skillset. In this class, we will slow down and breathe. We will read stitches, weave ends multiple ways for different fibers, work mattress stitch, graft, and learn a hybrid stitch that aligns row stitches to width stitches! There will also be discussion about why various seaming methods are so important to a garment. Can't wait to see you there!
